About Our Partner

Rwenzori Tourism Academy (RTA) is a regional training initiative based in western Uganda, focused on empowering local communities through sustainable tourism education. Established to support economic development while preserving the natural and cultural heritage of the Rwenzori Mountains—a UNESCO World Heritage Site—RTA delivers online and in-person training tailored to the needs of emerging tourism professionals. The academy has quickly become a model for community-led tourism development in ecologically sensitive regions.

The Challenge

Before partnering with Learn Tourism, Rwenzori Tourism Academy faced the dual challenge of limited access to professional training and the urgent need to preserve the fragile Rwenzori ecosystem. Traditional education systems couldn’t effectively reach remote communities, and local residents lacked the tools to participate meaningfully in a growing tourism economy. RTA saw an opportunity to harness online learning to bridge these gaps, build local capacity, and turn tourism into a force for sustainable development.

The Solution

Rwenzori Tourism Academy recognized early on that traditional tourism training models—often centralized in cities or limited to in-person workshops—weren’t meeting the needs of rural learners living in and around the Rwenzori Mountains. While they explored regional government programs and local NGO support, those initiatives often lacked industry-specific content, flexibility, or scalable delivery.

When RTA discovered Learn Tourism’s customizable, multilingual Learning Experience Platform (LXP) and on-demand course development services, the alignment was clear. The platform’s ability to deliver real-time dashboards, branded course environments, and mobile-accessible learning made it possible to reach remote learners while preserving high-quality instruction.

“We needed something flexible, scalable, and rooted in real-world tourism practices. Learn Tourism gave us a system we could adapt for our people, and expert support to back it up.”
Program Coordinator, Rwenzori Tourism Academy

Once onboarded, RTA worked closely with Learn Tourism’s instructional design team to co-create a modular online curriculum tailored to the region’s unique blend of ecological conservation, cultural heritage, and tourism potential. Using Learn Tourism’s built-in analytics and API tools, they were able to track student engagement in real time, assess skill gaps, and provide feedback loops for continuous course improvement.

Key features that drove success included:

  • 🎓 Multilingual course delivery, making content accessible across the region’s diverse linguistic communities.

  • 🔄 Self-paced learning modules combined with live expert-led sessions.

  • 📊 Instant enrollment and certification tracking to measure reach and impact.

  • 🌍 Integration of global guest lectures via webinars and video content.

“This wasn’t just about putting classes online. Learn Tourism helped us build an entire ecosystem of learning that respects our culture, protects our environment, and empowers our people.”
Rwenzori Instructor & Community Liaison

The Results

From the first enrollment, momentum grew. Word spread through local networks, and the platform's accessibility encouraged participation from youth, women, and underserved groups. In just a short time, RTA delivered over 3,500 enrollments, 60 certifications, and hosted six live expert-led sessions—an outcome that would have been impossible through conventional training methods alone.

“Tourism used to feel far away—something outsiders did. Now, I see it as a way for our village to grow, protect what we love, and share it with the world.”
Certified Participant, Rwenzori Learn Tourism Academy

These outcomes go beyond training—they reflect a shift in mindset, capacity, and community pride. By removing barriers to quality tourism education, Learn Tourism helped RTA fulfill its vision: a tourism economy that sustains both people and place.
