About Our Partner

Travel North Tahoe, Nevada, and Truckee-Tahoe Tourism Management District are destination organizations focused on protecting and promoting the Lake Tahoe and Truckee regions through sustainable tourism strategies, community engagement, and visitor education. Together, the organizations support local businesses, residents, and travelers while helping preserve the environmental and cultural character of one of North America’s most iconic outdoor destinations. Their collaborative stewardship initiatives have gained national attention for advancing responsible tourism and community-centered destination management.

The Challenge

As visitation to the Tahoe-Truckee region continued to grow, regional leaders recognized an opportunity to better align residents, frontline workers, and local businesses around shared stewardship values and visitor experience goals. While many people working in tourism cared deeply about the destination, there was no unified, scalable training program designed to strengthen destination knowledge, sustainability awareness, and community storytelling across the region. The organizations wanted a flexible solution that could educate and inspire participants while encouraging more responsible visitor interactions and long-term community pride.

The Solution

Regional leaders were seeking a training solution that could go beyond a traditional tourism ambassador program and create a stronger connection between stewardship, sustainability, and visitor experience. They needed a flexible platform that could support self-paced online learning, engage a wide range of participants, and reflect the unique culture and values of the Tahoe-Truckee region.

After evaluating different approaches, the organizations selected Learn Tourism because of its nonprofit mission, expertise in adult learning science, and ability to combine destination storytelling with measurable engagement analytics and interactive learning design. The ability to integrate videos, reflections, quizzes, sustainability messaging, and community storytelling into a branded online learning environment helped distinguish the program from more static or presentation-based training options.

Participants explored topics such as Washoe heritage, sustainable recreation, visitor empathy, and responsible travel while completing reflection exercises and knowledge checks throughout the course. Learn Tourism’s flexible learning platform also allowed regional stakeholders to track participation, engagement, and completion data in real time.

The impact of the experience was reflected in participant feedback throughout the program. One learner shared, “Learning about the root of the name Tahoe continues to increase my respect of the area.” Another participant described how the course changed the way they approach hospitality and visitor interactions: “Caring about the customer, listening and offering suggestions with open-ended questions, putting the cell phone down when a customer is present.”

By combining measurable learning outcomes with personal reflection and community-centered storytelling, the program helped create a stronger network of local champions prepared to represent the destination with authenticity, pride, and care.

The Results

The Lake Tahoe & Truckee Destination Champion Program delivered measurable results across learner engagement, knowledge retention, and community impact. More than 220 participants completed the program, contributing to an impressive 85% completion rate — far exceeding typical benchmarks for voluntary online learning programs. Participants also achieved an average assessment score of 92.7%, demonstrating strong comprehension of destination knowledge, stewardship principles, and visitor experience practices.

Beyond the metrics, the program helped strengthen emotional connection and community pride throughout the region. Participants consistently described feeling more confident engaging with visitors, more aware of sustainable tourism practices, and more connected to the culture and values of the Tahoe-Truckee community.

One participant reflected, “Breathing easier, taking all that Tahoe/Truckee has to offer in, being at one with the land and its surroundings.” Another shared, “It matters because life is so fast, slowing down isn't just a good thing to do, it's necessary for the body and soul.”

The program also inspired participants to take action by encouraging responsible visitor behavior, supporting local conservation efforts, and promoting tools like public transportation and reusable water initiatives. These outcomes reinforced the region’s broader stewardship goals while creating a growing network of local champions prepared to represent Tahoe and Truckee with empathy, authenticity, and care.

The success of the initiative also gained national attention through coverage in the Destination Stewardship Report, further highlighting the region’s collaborative approach to sustainable tourism and community-centered destination management.
