Are You Ready to Welcome Travelers with Disabilities?
A practical starting point for building confidence, awareness, and inclusion across tourism
At Learn Tourism, we believe that welcoming every traveler starts with understanding, confidence, and care. As part of our ongoing collaboration with VisitAble, we’re excited to introduce a new self-assessment designed to help tourism professionals reflect on their readiness to welcome travelers with disabilities.
This self-assessment is a simple but powerful tool created to spark awareness, surface learning needs, and support more inclusive visitor experiences across the tourism industry.
A Thoughtful Tool for Real-World Reflection
The “Are You Ready to Welcome Travelers with Disabilities?” self-assessment is designed for tourism professionals at every level — from frontline staff and managers to destination leaders, educators, and partners.
Rather than testing knowledge, the assessment invites honest reflection around:
- Comfort and confidence when interacting with travelers with disabilities.
- Experience responding to accommodation or accessibility requests.
- Familiarity with respectful language and customer service scenarios.
- Perceived challenges, gaps, and learning needs.
The assessment takes approximately 6–8 minutes to complete and is intentionally approachable, practical, and grounded in real-world tourism environments.
Why This Self-Assessment Matters
Travelers with disabilities represent a significant and often underserved segment of the visitor economy. Yet many tourism professionals report uncertainty not due to lack of care, but due to limited training, unclear guidance, or fear of “getting it wrong.”
This self-assessment helps normalize shared challenges across the industry, identify common learning priorities, and inform future training and resources. It also helps move the conversation beyond compliance and toward confidence, empathy, and inclusion. All responses are anonymous and will be reported only in aggregate to highlight overall trends across tourism roles and environments.
What This Will Inform
Insights gathered from the self-assessment will be used to shape a follow-up webinar, where aggregated results will be shared alongside practical guidance and real-world examples.
Participants who wish to receive the summarized results and be invited to the webinar will have the option to share their contact information at the end of the assessment.
Who Should Participate
This self-assessment is designed for professionals working across tourism, including:
- DMOs and CVBs
- Hotels and lodging
- Attractions, museums, and cultural sites
- Tour operators and guides
- Restaurants, breweries, and food service
- Transportation providers, outdoor recreation, events, and visitor information services
Whether you interact with visitors daily or only occasionally, your perspective matters.
If you’re curious about how prepared you feel today and what could help you feel more confident tomorrow, we invite you to participate.
