Hand Sanitizer and High-Flying Strategies: Cambria Jones on Navigating Careers and Destinations with Searchwide Global
In the latest episode of the Business Class Podcast, I had the pleasure of speaking with Cambria Jones, the Chief Marketing and Experience Officer at Searchwide Global. Cambria's journey from the DMO (Destination Marketing Organization) space to the world of executive recruitment is both inspiring and insightful. Here’s a glimpse into our conversation, where we delve into her experiences, interests, and the valuable lessons she’s learned along the way.
The Essential Travel Companion
We kicked off our chat with a fun question about travel essentials. For Cambria, it’s her “little go bag” filled with hand sanitizer, lotion, and lip products. This small ritual is a must-have for her travels, showcasing her meticulous nature and attention to detail. She also shared her efficient packing strategies, including the use of packing cubes and a well-organized routine.
From DMO to Executive Recruitment
Cambria’s career has seen a significant evolution since joining Searchwide Global. Starting as a Marketing Manager, her role has grown, and she now serves as the Chief Marketing and Experience Officer. Her responsibilities have expanded to encompass both marketing tactics and the entire client and candidate experience. This role allows her to ensure a seamless and engaging experience for all involved, reflecting her dedication to high standards and strategic vision.
Bridging Two Worlds
When asked about the transition from working with DMOs to an executive recruitment firm, Cambria noted that it feels like she works with all the DMOs simultaneously. She leverages her DMO experience to create compelling position overviews that market not just the job but the community and lifestyle associated with it. This unique perspective helps potential candidates understand what life would be like in their new role and location.
Personal Insights and Future Aspirations
Cambria shared that her background is a blend of Wisconsin roots and a Dallas home base. She revealed her love for the Bay Area and Washington, D.C., as potential alternative places she’d consider living. On her international bucket list is Bali, a destination she’s eager to explore for its Zen-like ambiance.
Describing herself as a planner with flexibility, Cambria enjoys having a structured itinerary but remains open to spontaneous adventures. This balance reflects her approach to both leisure and business travel.
From Genetics to Marketing
Interestingly, Cambria’s early interest in genetics led her to a path in communication and public relations. Her fascination with science and learning remains a driving force in her current role, where she continually seeks to deepen her understanding and engage in meaningful conversations.
Mentorship and Lessons Learned
Cambria attributes much of her growth to her mentors, including her mother and her current boss, Mike Gamble. She emphasizes the importance of grace and patience, both in personal interactions and professional growth. Her greatest lesson has been learning to embrace flexibility and not overly constrain herself with rigid plans.
Looking ahead, Cambria aims to give back to the industry by supporting emerging leaders and breaking down barriers to entry. She envisions creating more opportunities for young professionals to thrive and contribute to the industry.
A big thank you to Cambria for joining me on this episode and sharing her experiences and insights. Her journey and approach offer valuable lessons for professionals in tourism, marketing, and beyond.
