December 2023 Air Passenger Travel Highlights
A Big Leap in International Visitor Arrivals!
In 2023, the United States welcomed 66.5 million international visitors, marking a 31% increase from 2022! This impressive growth brings us to 84% of the pre-pandemic arrival numbers from 2019.
Travel Trends by State
- New York took the lead as the top destination for overseas travelers in 2023, moving up from second place in 2022. It was followed by Florida and California.
- New York City was the favorite city, with Miami and Los Angeles also seeing high numbers of international visitors.
Notably, several states and territories saw international arrivals surpass their 2019 levels:
- Puerto Rico (+85%)
- Tennessee (+15%)
- Texas (+7%)
- Georgia (+5%)

U.S. Citizen Travel
In 2023, U.S. citizens made 98.5 million trips abroad, a 22% increase from 2022. This brings us almost back to the 2019 levels of 99.7 million departures.

Travel Trade Highlights
- International visitors spent $213.1 billion in the U.S. in 2023, a 29% increase from the previous year. This amount is 89% of the travel exports seen in 2019 and supports 1.6 million U.S. jobs.
- U.S. residents spent $215.4 billion abroad, up 33% from 2022 and surpassing pre-pandemic levels by 17%.
This resulted in a $2.3 billion trade deficit for the year.
